Activities

Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry:

  • Overview of Medicinal chemistry and its role in drug discovery development.
  • Contributions to human health and the interdisciplinary nature of the field.

Lab Safety

  • Discussions on Safety protocols, proper handling of chemicals, and the use of personal protective equipment.

Computational Activities: In-silico drug design techniques

  • How to use PyMOL to visualize a range of molecular structure file formats, including PDB (protein data bank). How to use PyMOL to build and edit molecular structures, add or remove residues, and optimize geometries.
  • Guiding students through hands-on exercises using molecular modeling software to visualize and analyze drug-target interactions.
  • How to use Chemdraw to draw molecules and add groups on existing compounds to increase binding affinity.

Panel Discussion: Careers in Medicinal Chemistry

  • Sharing experiences and insights into various career opportunities and paths in medicinal chemistry.
  • Encouraging high school women to ask questions about the field and learn about the diverse opportunities available in medicinal chemistry fields.

Program Creator and Facilitator

I am a second-year chemistry (Medicinal chemistry) graduate student at West Virginia University. I am a passionate medicinal chemist dedicated to advancing drug discovery and development. I am a recipient of the 2024-2025 Women of WVU Enrichment Fund Grant.

I am currently working in Dr. Hacer Karatas Bristow's Laboratory, and I am excited to organize this outreach program focused on medicinal chemistry and mentorship.

This initiative is designed to equip high school women with the knowledge, skills, and inspiration they need to pursue careers in STEM fields.
