Abstract: This session will cover my experience and path to my career at NAWCWD, which included multiple academic and government internships throughout my undergraduate and graduate career. These opportunities will be highlighted, such as the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) and the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) program. Ultimately the SMART scholarship led me to NAWCWD, which is a scholarship that is open to both undergraduates and graduate students, specifically for those wanting to be a civilian scientist within the Department of Defense (DoD). In addition to tips and tricks that I have learned along the way, I will also discuss the research department at NAWCWD, as well as some active research projects that are ongoing within my group. Many students are exposed to two career paths, academia and industry, however there are rich basic and applied research areas within the DoD. As a mass spectrometrist by training, some of my research includes new analytical techniques for detecting, identifying, and remediating environmental pollutants, but other areas include new synthetic techniques for the development of energetics by high throughput reaction screening through robotics, microdroplet and thin film chemistries, and on-line reaction monitoring.
