AbstractProduct development is a balancing act between what is possible and what is financially reasonable. A product manager sits at the fulcrum between the customers who define the needs and the engineers and finance folks who determine what will happen. Setting of project goals early and being honest in both directions is crucial to success. Having developed 3 major products for the “Nicolet” family of vibrational tools, my perspective covers a lot of our customer base and a huge percentage of our revenue stream. In this talk, I will examine the process and pitfalls of product development and discuss some of the triumphs and stumbles along the way. The primary focus will be on the newest product, the Thermo Scientific™ Nicolet™ RaptIR™ FTIR microscope. I will also discuss my personal career random walk.
