Aromatic rings appear in many societally important molecules including medicines, agrochemicals, and liquid crystals. A large body of work has gone into synthetic methods to functionalize aromatic rings, especially C-H functionalization. The vast majority of methods access a limited number of arene substitution patterns and I will discuss my groups efforts to use iodonium and aryne chemistry to access other more densely functionalized arenes. This work is conducted toward our long-term goal to oxidatively generate arynes from simple and readily available aromatic building blocs.
