Dr. Boyd earned his B.S. degree in biochemistry in 1998 under the supervision of Dr. David Laude at the University of Texas at Austin and his Ph.D. in environmental toxicology in 2004 at Texas Tech University under the supervision of Dr. George P. Cobb III. 


Dr. Boyd's graduate studies focused on the development of fieldable sensors to achieve single system passive collection and rapid detection of toxicant vapors in indoor environments. Dr. Boyd concurrently developed a technique that was able to generate primary standards of low vapor pressure analytes at the part-per-billion level, which served as the scientific foundation of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Emissions Program test-bed. His basic research was extended into real-world applications with employment at ANSER where his primary responsibility was to lead the scientific and programmatic aspects of the DARPA Sensors for Immune Buildings Program, which sought to rapidly develop alternative detection technologies for use in future infrastructure protection. He also served as an advisor to the DARPA Immune Building (IB) program that culminated in the world’s first operational “smart building”, capable of autonomously detecting exposure, restoring building function (following an attack), and preserving forensic evidence. 

Following his time at ANSER, Dr. Boyd served as a Senior Scientist/Toxicologist at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, where he spearheaded the development of a new predictive toxicology group focused on coupling mathematical models with in vitro pharmacodynamic responses. 

At WVU, Dr. Boyd has been very successful in using fundamental thermodynamic principles to deconstruct the basic mechanisms of survival and death by monitoring exposure(s) from the point of view of the biological system under stress. More specifically, Dr. Boyd is working toward an understanding of how humans interpret (from cellular mechanisms to physiological integration) the milieu of mixed environmental signals (ranging from chemical exposures to mental/physical stress) received each day. This complex area of research necessitates that the hypotheses be simple and straightforward (e.g. Bliss Independence applies to the integration of kinase responses), and requires that the experimental samples appropriately match the question at hand. Dr. Boyd has been fortunate to be able to work with multiple hierarchal levels of biological samples that include mammalian cell culture, animal models and human subjects. The applications of his research are vast, and range from toxicity screening to medical biomarkers and stress-related disease etiology.
